Just stumbled on this and had to laugh.... I'll tell you what, if you go to Mt. Vernon and take the tour, and you don't come away thinking ol GW was gay... well then you clearly weren't listening!

"Martha's room was over on this side of the house, and over here was George's... and right down these steps is the Apartment of the LIFELONG BACHELOR manager of the plantation... " The tour guides go on and on about how GW himself picked out the paint for the interior of the house, the chandeliers, the china, the crystal, the wall sconces, how he designed the 'logo' up on the wall, and on and on!!! It is 100% "Queer Eye"!

Every single tidbit of information seemed to be delivered so you could read between the lines... "Oh, he enjoyed wrestling? I see!!!" It was hilarious.'

Clearly there is more to the 'Cherry Tree' story than they are telling us.

(and that Crossing the Delaware painting... totally gay!)

My oldest brother used to work at the Getty, and he still works there on a part-time basis. He has never commented about the gayness of the statuary in the Getty's collection, but this might have something to do with the fact that my brother is straight and married. Still, my siblings and I used to tease each other throughout our growing up years that so-and-so was gay, or that so-and-so liked cock and had a lifesized rubber doll of Mr. T in his closet which he slept with every night. The bulk of the gay teasing among me and my siblings was spearheaded by me since I was the youngest and always the most immature. It only seems apt that my brother should have to walk by such spectacles of homoeroticism every day at his job. The echoes of the Brothers Freeman prattling and copious name-calling have had an uncanny way of reverberating throughout our lives in various ways, and I'm sure the sprawled naked twink probably reminds my brother of me when I was younger.

I just saw this film for the first time lasts night, and it deeply disturbed me -- so much so that I actually felt ill. I could only keep repeting to myself, thank the gods this was nearly 50 years ago and feminism has made great strides since then... and yet this kind of misogyny is still rampant, if only having gone underground (except amongst some "traditional"-minded types.) Really. really scary. Thanks for your critique that gives me some internal validation for my mental turmoil!

I am writing only to address the point about misogyny, because I have yet to read The Curtain, either-- though I intend to, along with all his works, because contrary to Kelly's opinion, I have never read any discussion of human motivations that felt more real than Kundera's. His discussion of men's feelings and of women's are equitable and insightful, and, most importantly, compassionate.

I cannot even begin to comprehend the magnitude of your situation, but I can attempt to be sympathetic, albeit frivolous. Thanks fro sharing your story, it's made me think about the judgments we make every time we hear someone cough in 'our space.' Quick to assume it's TB, we never actually think about the trauma the person coughing into their handkerchief may have to endure on a daily basis. I wish more and more people would tell their stories so us plebs could learn the difference between cystic fibrosis and glaucoma.
The gay part I can understand, and will now do my best to understand the cystic fibrosis part. xxx

I've been out from the loop with football too much time. I loved it as a young child, growing up. Being from Texas, it had been always the Cowboys. Back then, the heroes were Roger Staubach and Tom Landry. Later, after relocating to California, I found myself from time to time rooting for John Brodie of the 49ers, but it was always Cowboys as soon as two came head-to-head. At this moment, I'm retired. The pressures of work deadlines, personal projects and endless errands have diminished. And I wax nostalgically for the gridiron and also the exhilaration of the tournament. Yes, I'll be watching considerably more football. You may bet on it.

I can understand the sentiment behind this post. A number of years ago, my sister and I had a conversation in which she was quite offended that I claimed that Liberace was gay. "But he testified in court that he wasn't!" she protested.

Nowadays, I would hope that would be less of a problem, but it appears we're still at the stage where stating that a certain public figure is LGB is considered a gross insult, rather than a statement. If Ralph Lauren was as in the closet about his Jewish origins as Clarke, et al., were/are about their sexualities, would it be considered beyond the pale to bring it up? The cartoonist who created "Krazy Kat" would never appear in public or be photographed without his hat on, lest people see his hair and realize that he was - gasp! - part Black. If someone had brought this up after his death, no doubt well-meaning people would complain that some spoilsport was maligning a great artists's memory.

'Wake Up Mr Beech'

Hey it's great to see this feature as we have the same situation now. Our common beech tree's are already opening but the copper beech trees appear to be silent and still. Much is our eagerness for them to open we are having illusions that the buds have movement but then...it appears not. Anyway, it was good to see we are not the only ones. Thanks.
